Maui is the second largest of the eight major islands that make up the state of Hawaii, and could be considered one of the most beautiful. Hiking and mountain biking are popular past times on the island, with several public trails that run through the state forests and the national parks. There are two vast national parks on the island; the Haleakala National Park; an alpine wilderness offering spectacular views over Maui and from the peak you can see five of the eight major islands, more than you can see from any other point in Hawaii and the Wainapanapa State Park; made up of a black sandy beach, sea arch and sea caves. The Iao Valley State Monument is also worth a visit, a lush green space with stunning views and peaceful streams and there are different walking trails available here depending on your fitness. Canoeing and Kayaking are also very common on the island and there are plenty of places for the active beginner to get started, while for a relaxing past time, snorkelling is a definite. The best place to snorkel, is “Turtle Town” offering a great variety of fish and coral and the occasional large turtle, it is bordered by a quaint black sand beach. While in Hawaii get yourself immersed in the culture and take part in a Luau, a celebration of Polynesian singing and dancing that is usually accompanied by a buffet dinner.
